Understanding the Differences: Single vs. EP vs. Album

When releasing music through Venice, your project will be categorized as a Single, EP, or Album depending on the number of tracks and the total runtime. These categories follow the standards used by major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

Below is a breakdown to help you understand how your release will be classified:

What is a Single?

A Single is typically:

  • 1 to 3 tracks

  • Total runtime is 30 minutes or less

  • No individual track is 10 minutes or longer

Note: If your release has only 1 track, it will automatically be categorized as a Single.

What is an EP (Extended Play)?

An EP is slightly longer than a Single but shorter than a full Album. Your release may be classified as an EP if it meets either of the following:

Option A:

  • 4 to 6 tracks total

  • Total runtime is 30 minutes or less

Option B:

  • 1 to 3 tracks

  • At least one track is 10 minutes or longer

  • Total runtime is still 30 minutes or less

Streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify automatically apply these guidelines. Venice cannot manually change the EP designation once delivered to DSPs.

What is an Album?

An Album is generally:

  • 7 or more tracks, or

  • Any release with a total runtime longer than 30 minutes

Even if your release has fewer than 7 tracks, if the total length exceeds 30 minutes, it will be classified as an Album.

Can I Request a Change?

Unfortunately, DSPs automatically assign the release type based on the criteria above. Venice follows these rules when delivering your music, and we cannot override the classification on your behalf. If you need to change the format of your release (e.g., from Single to EP), you’ll need to takedown the release and re-submit it with adjustments to match your desired format.

Tips Before Uploading:

  • Double-check your tracklist and runtimes.

  • Decide upfront how you want your release to be classified.

  • Remember: Classification affects how fans discover your music, so be strategic.
